Letter of Intent:
I began to study architecture in college with the intention of becoming a residential architect.
The most inspiring characteristic about residential homes are their relationship with the human being.
As a designer, I want to be fully involved with my client in creating his or her desired atmosphere,
and personally, I believe that designing residential homes will enable me to have the closest
relationship possible with my client. In my home state of Hawaii, I’ve always been surrounded
by beautiful homes, and an intriguing aspect of designing homes in the islands is the advantage
of the warm climate. Being inspired by Hawaiian home designs that welcome the open air, I am
drawn to the idea of designing with the interaction and thresholds between inside and
outside.
I realized in my early years of studying that there needs to be a pure understanding of how a space
interacts with the person and that the means of understanding can be found in non-conventional
ways of design. I began to thoroughly investigate the process of design through exploration and
pure conceptual approaches. I have concluded that the process of design is most important.
The process contains the most valuable information to an end result. It is my mission to use the
digital realm to improve the architect’s efficiency and to explore the possibilities of design that
most architects would only hope to imagine. Based on very strict rules and inspired by the
environment, a digital machine can yield very intriguing and innovative spatial solutions that
are dynamic, unique, and possible to build. My contribution to architecture is the exploration
of process and a path to realization.
In graduate school, I have had time to refine and craft the design process I have started.
I envision obtaining my masters degree in architecture and working in the states to gain
experience for a few years then returning to Hawaii to design homes and be with my family.
